Riparian systems, the green belts between the water and the uplands, are like veins on the prairie.
Composing less than 2% of the landscape, they support 80% of life. The resilience of these systems is critical to the health and diversity of the grasslands as a whole.
A healthy riparian zone provides
  • High-quality forage for livestock.
  • Critical water resource for working lands.
  • Corridors for wildlife movement.
  • Resiliency during drought and flood events.
  • Vegetation to stabilize banks and keep water cool.
Because these critical resources cross public and private land, they require us to work collaboratively.
This tool is a resource for us to work together at watershed scale.
